Karma Yoga

by Swami Sivananda

Selfless service of humanity prepares the aspirant for the attainment of cosmic consciousness, or the life of oneness or unity with God. By doing service you purify your heart. Humility, pure love, sympathy, tolerance and mercy are developed. Sense of separateness is annihilated. Selfishness is eradicated. Eventually, you get knowledge of the Self.

Universal Prayer

O Lord! I do want to serve the world disinterestedly and practice Karma Yoga. I am sometimes perplexed, agitated and depressed. I am in a dilemma. I do not know what to do. I have no clear idea of right and wrong. This world is full of apparent contradictions, paradoxes and puzzles, peculiar troubles and difficulties. Thou hast given me a peculiar mind with peculiar habits. Nay, this world is full of temptations. I have no strength to resist temptations, public opinions, criticisms, oppressions, pressures and even assaults. I am not able to please anybody to the fullest extent. Enemies do crop up, though I keep quiet, though I do not interfere with anybody.

O sweet Lord! Give me strength to control the restless turbulent mind that ever wanders. Stand behind me always and guide me in every inch of my action. Give me good thoughts. Give me a calm, pure and balanced mind. O Lord, give me light, knowledge and purity.
Om Om Om

Give to the poor, the sick, the helpless, and the forlorn. Give to the Sadhus, Sannyasins, Gurus, religious and social institutions. Thank those who give you an opportunity to serve and do charity. Give with right mental attitude and realize God.

Work is worship. Work is Puja. Work is meditation. Do not forget this. You will have to evolve spiritually through work and meditation combined. Feel that the whole world is your home, one big family.

Work that is done without expectation of fruit can never bind one to karma or samsara. Do not expect anything when you serve or give. Those who serve the world truly serve themselves. Do not lose any single opportunity in helping and serving others. Perform regular selfless service daily with the thought, “I am serving God in manifestation.”

When you serve, remember that you work for God. You will soon grow spiritually.
