The Art of Breathing with Lakshmi

Take a moment and notice the breath. Is it open and free, steady and effortless? Quite often in our days, the breath is compromised by stress, poor posture, poor thinking and eating habits. With something so vital for our daily life, it is of upmost importance to understand how to breathe properly. Proper breathing improves concentration, muscle pain, digestion, elimination, balances the emotions and all systems of the body. Our areas of chronic pain and discomfort are related to improper functioning of the breath and muscles of breathing. It is so easy to do. Come join us to learn how to harness the power of the breath and increase health one breath at a time. In this workshop we will cover the muscles of breathing, how to deepen and smooth out the breath, simple breathing practices for stress and pain relief, and how to use the breath for purification of the body and mind.

This retreat day will include asana (postures), pranayama (breathing practices), kirtan, meditation, satsang, and high spiritual teachings appropriate for teenagers that enhance their interaction with worldly activities. Also included will be karma yoga to teach teens the importance of selfless service, study of the yamas & niyamas (yogic principles), and a yogic art project. A vegetarian supper will be provided. The lumbar spine, or lower back, is a complex series of relationships between joints, muscles, nerves, ligaments, connective tissues and organs. Yoga for Caregivers with Leslie

In our lives we may play the role of caregiver in many capacities - parent, grandparent, sibling, friend. It may be at times of birth, death, happiness, sadness, illness or injury. But often we are not sure how to help others in the best way possible. In this workshop we will cover techniques and principles from the science of yoga that help us to become more effective caregivers including meditation, breathing, prayer, relaxation, and visualization. We will help teach you how to lose any fear of the sick and dying and how to cultivate compassion and unconditional love for all beings. You will understand the importance of first being your own caregiver to be able to support others. We will also explore using the power of faith and love in caring for others and their power in healing. All levels welcome. No experience necessary.

Yoga for the Thoracic Spine with Lakshmi

The thoracic spine, or mid back region is an area of chronic tension for many students. This area of the spine is put under more than the usual amount of stress from sitting or driving for long periods, improper posture and breathing habits, negative thinking and muscle imbalance. By restoring proper motion in the ribs, shoulder blades, and diaphragm, many issues in the thoracic spine are quickly corrected. Increasing the flexibility in this area is of upmost importance, not just in terms of being able to execute asana, but also for proper nerve, muscle, and organ function. In this experiential workshop, we will study the anatomy of the thoracic region including the spinal vertebrae, muscles and chest organs to learn their correct functioning, how to restore this functioning and maintain spinal health in our daily lives. The cervical spine, or neck region is the most common area of tension and pain in the spine, and the area that is most often ignored. By understanding how the cervical spine moves, what is attached to it, how they relate to one another, and how to keep these areas in proper relationship will quickly begin to alleviate tension and pain. With understanding comes the opportunity to change, and thus the door opens to healing. In this experiential workshop we will study the anatomy of the cervical spine and neck region as well as factors that influence neck pain, and therapeutic exercises to stretch, strengthen and realign the neck.
